    We're looking for an exceptional Director of Assurance to join our Executive Team and lead the development of a modern, independent assurance function across our charity.

    Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, you will be a trusted and influential advisor to the Board and Executive Team, providing independent assurance, robust challenge and strategic insight across all areas of the organisation. You will develop and lead a comprehensive assurance framework that provides the Board with clear visibility of organisational performance, control effectiveness, emerging risks and the actions required to mitigate them. This role requires a confident and highly credible leader who can engage effectively with Directors, Board members and senior stakeholders while maintaining independence and objectivity.

    You'll play a vital role in strengthening organisational oversight, identifying emerging risks, and driving a culture of continuous improvement.

     As Director of Assurance, you will lead our organisation-wide approach to:

    • Insight, Intelligence & Reporting

    Board Assurance & Governance

    • Lead the Board Assurance Framework (BAF) and corporate risk framework.
    • Provide independent assurance to the Board and Committees on strategic delivery, control effectiveness, assurance gaps and emerging risks.
    •  Ensure appropriate escalation of significant risks and control failures.
    • Build and maintain highly effective relationships with the Board, Committees and Executive Team, acting as a trusted source of assurance and strategic risk insight.
    • Provide confident and independent challenge to senior leaders, ensuring robust scrutiny of controls, governance and organisational performance.
    • Deliver high-quality Board reporting which clearly articulates risks, assurance levels, control effectiveness and recommended mitigating actions.

    Quality Assurance & Regulatory Oversight

    • Lead a risk-based quality assurance framework across services and corporate functions.
    • Provide assurance on quality, safety, compliance and regulatory readiness (CQC, CI and Ofsted).
    • Analyse intelligence from incidents, complaints, safeguarding, audits and whistleblowing to identify themes, risks and improvement priorities.

    Risk Management & Business Continuity

    • Lead the organisation-wide risk management framework, ensuring effective risk identification, ownership and alignment between operational and strategic risks.
    • Drive improvements in risk maturity, culture, capability and use of data.
    • Hold overall accountability for business continuity planning, testing and response.
    • Lead the identification, assessment and escalation of strategic and operational risks across all functions of the organisation.
    • Ensure effective risk mitigation plans are in place and provide assurance to the Board regarding the adequacy and effectiveness of controls.
    • Develop a mature risk culture where risk ownership, accountability and proactive management are embedded throughout the organisation.

    Health & Safety

    • Provide strategic leadership and assurance on Health & Safety, ensuring effective governance, accountability and escalation of significant risks and incidents.

    Internal Audit

    • Hold executive accountability for the internal audit function.
    • Commission and oversee independent audits aligned to principal risks.
    • Monitor audit recommendations and ensure timely implementation of agreed actions.

    Complaints & Whistleblowing

    • Oversee complaints and whistleblowing processes, ensuring concerns are managed consistently, appropriately and in line with organisational expectations.
    • Ensure lessons learned and emerging trends are identified, acted upon and escalated where necessary.
    • Provide assurance to the Board on risks and mitigating actions.

    Insight & Continuous Assurance

    • Develop integrated assurance reporting across quality, risk, audit, workforce and safety metrics.
    • Provide forward-looking insight and early warning indicators to support Executive and Board decision-making.
    • Ensure the quality, accuracy and integrity of organisational data.

    Leadership & Culture

    • Promote a culture of transparency, accountability, learning and continuous improvement.
    • Build highly effective and credible relationships with Board members, Executive Directors and senior leaders, whilst maintaining independence, objectivity and the confidence to provide constructive challenge where required.
    • Contribute as a member of the Executive Team to organisational strategy, programmes and change initiatives.
    • Hold budget responsibility for the function and lead assurance-related teams and resources.
    • Demonstrate strong professional presence and personal resilience, influencing at the highest levels of the organisation.
    • Foster a culture of accountability and assurance, ensuring leaders understand their responsibilities for risk, governance and control effectiveness.

    You will be working closely with the Executive Team, Board and Committees and report directly to the CEO , you’ll ensure robust assurance frameworks are in place, providing clear visibility of organisational risks, control effectiveness and opportunities for improvement.

    Qualifications, Experience, and Knowledge

    • Senior leadership experience in governance, assurance, audit or risk
    • Experience working at Board / Committee level
    • Strong understanding of regulation (e.g. social care, NHS, or equivalent sectors)
    • Background in one or more of, Internal Audit, Risk Management, Quality/Regulatory Assurance
    • Significant experience working directly with Boards, Board Committees and Executive Teams in a highly regulated environment.
    • Proven track record of designing, implementing and embedding organisation-wide assurance frameworks across both operational and corporate functions.
    • Extensive experience in identifying, assessing and managing strategic and operational risks and providing assurance on the effectiveness of mitigation plans.
    • Experience of delivering independent assurance and influencing decision-making at Executive and Board level.

     Competencies, Skills, and Abilities

    • Exceptional ability to build credibility and influence with Board members, Executive Directors and senior stakeholders.
    • Demonstrable experience of providing independent challenge and professional scrutiny in complex organisational environments.
    • Strong commercial and strategic awareness with the ability to assess risk across multiple functions.
    • Proven ability to design and implement assurance frameworks that provide meaningful oversight and organisational insight.
    • Excellent judgement and decision-making capability when dealing with complex, sensitive or high-risk matters.
    • Highly assertive, confident and resilient, with the gravitas to operate effectively at Board level.
    • Ability to identify emerging risks, evaluate control effectiveness and provide clear recommendations on mitigating actions.
    • Strong understanding of corporate governance, risk management and assurance principles.

    This is a national role covering England and Scotland. Travel to Widnes Head Office and services across the UK when required. You will be part of the Executive Team reporting to the Chief Executive.

    Interview Process

    Following the closing date, shortlisted candidates will be invited to an initial 30-minute interview via Microsoft Teams

    A further shortlist will then be selected to progress to the second stage of the process, which will consist of a face-to-face interview and presentation. Candidates will also be invited to visit one of our services.
